Car accidents may result in life-threatening injuries and sometimes even fatalities. When some of the accidents are immediately apparent due to their nature, some may be more difficult to notice.

Internal bleeding is one such type of injury. Some of the signs that you or a loved one may have internal bleeding from a car accident may include the following.

Dizziness and weakness

Internal bleeding can result in a sudden feeling of dizziness, especially when moving from a sitting to a standing position, due to blood loss reducing the amount of blood circulating through your body. This drop in circulation can also cause muscle weakness and fatigue. Additionally, if blood loss becomes severe, it may lead to syncope (fainting), which can further indicate a serious underlying problem.

Low blood pressure and shock symptoms

Experiencing low blood pressure, especially if it’s abnormal for you, can be a significant sign of internal bleeding. As blood volume decreases due to internal blood loss, blood pressure can drop, leading to symptoms of shock. These symptoms may include feeling lightheaded, clammy skin, rapid heartbeat and confusion, signaling that your body is struggling to maintain adequate blood flow.

Breathing issues and chest pain

Shortness of breath or sudden chest pain could indicate internal bleeding in the chest cavity or lungs. This can lead to a condition called hemothorax, where blood collects around the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. If you experience these symptoms, especially after a traumatic event, medical attention is crucial to prevent respiratory distress.

Gastrointestinal symptoms

New or unusual gastrointestinal symptoms—such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea—may indicate internal bleeding in the abdominal area. Blood loss in the digestive system can lead to these symptoms, along with potential signs of blood in vomit or stool. These symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for less serious issues, but after an accident, they should be checked immediately to rule out bleeding in the abdomen.

If you were injured in a car accident due to negligence by another person, you may be able to pursue a personal injury claim for compensation with proper legal guidance.
